Cost of NOT automating today: benefits of a fully automated factory

If you want to succeed in the age of “Logistics 5.0”, it is vital to know how to build and develop automated factory. This new era has led to such advances as: a reliance on vehicles and robots to move and handle goods (e.g. the use of AGVs and AMRs), on sensors, on the connectivity with the Internet of Things, and on advanced computing systems with management software and data analysis.

Our speech aims to explain how to think and develop an automated factory in the simplest possible way, starting with the basic rules you may already know, and proceeding to others you might not yet have considered. Some of the management practices from the past are still valid, but advances in technology have led to new challenges and opportunities.

What has changed today is the tools we use for everyday operations: mechanical means are combined with electronics, and the work of man with the work of machines. The way of managing resources has also changed, and this includes all collaborators, equipment, goods, and finally, data.
Indeed, in relation to data, the key lies in the concept of integrating IT with OT from upstream to downstream systems.

The Environmental Impact of E-commerce Deliveries: Between Big Truths and False Myths

How environmentally sustainable is the delivery of an e-commerce order? This is a debated issue, with still contrasting views. The environmental impact of e-commerce logistics depends on several factors, including the operational choices of the parties involved, delivery methods, consumer behavior, and the geographic location of the customer. Among the delivery options, pick-up points are proposed as a potentially more sustainable alternative to home delivery. But is it really so? What are the “big truths” and what are the “false myths” related to the sustainability of e-commerce deliveries?

The conference will explore these topics, presenting the research of the B2C Logistics Center at Politecnico di Milano on the environmental sustainability of B2C e-commerce, with a particular focus on last-mile logistics. It will also be an opportunity for direct discussion with industry operators to clarify how to balance logistical efficiency and environmental impact reduction.

Beyond the Product: Servitization as a Lever for the Future of Intralogistics

Servitization in intralogistics is emerging as a strategic model that integrates advanced services with traditional products, improving operational efficiency and differentiating cost models. According to the Internet of Things Observatory, 58% of Italian SMEs have increased investments in Industrial IoT projects, with 11% reporting increases of over 30%.

This is a trend we cannot ignore, and it is also emerging in intralogistics. Essentially, the integration of digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things, is crucial to develop advanced services that stem from a perfect understanding of one’s machines and extend to the design of digital models, which serve as the technological base for driving change. The results observed so far include pay-per-use or pay-per-performance models that allow payment based on actual machine use or performance, optimizing operational costs.

Therefore, this is a strategic lever that must be utilized as soon as possible, as it requires targeted investments and a certain level of financial stability. A new challenge for a sector that must adapt quickly to compete in increasingly competitive and demanding global markets.
